My Best Friend’s Wedding (1997)

Plot: When a woman’s long-time friend reveals he’s engaged, she realizes she loves him herself and sets out to get him, with only days before the wedding. (IMDB)

Studio: Sony/Columbia

Box Office: $127.1 million

1. Are there two or more named People of Color? No

2. Do they talk to each other? No

3. About something other than White people? No

4. Asian Bonus: Is there an Asian character? No

Passed? NO

Commentary: This film doesn’t even try. It is set in Chicago, a diverse urban city, and I could argue that all the extras were white. There were plenty of public scenes, where there would be a large number of background extras- from the wedding events (brunches, reception) to the baseball game and train station and those all lacked color. Walter’s secretary was Latina and an extra encouraging a fight between the two leading ladies was African-American. Neither role going far to break societal stereotypes.
